Slinky apples and microwave applesauce

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

What do you think of when you hear the word apple? For some it’s an apple's crunchy taste, or bobbing for apples at a Halloween party or your logo on an iPhone or Macbook. Have you ever heard of a slinky apple? I hadn’t heard of it until I worked with the kids in our garden club. In the video above, you can find out what a slinky apple is and how to make one. You will need an apple peeler, slicer, and corer tool, which are sold at Walmart, Fred Meyer and Amazon. Apples also have some amazing health benefits.

Here is the scoop on apples!

Apples:

  • are a good source of fiber (especially with the skin left on). They have 2 types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber comes from plants, dissolves in water, helps soak up dietary fluid, helps stabilize blood sugar and it can also help lower cholesterol. Insoluble fiber comes from plants too; it comes from the skin of an apple and does not dissolve in water. Insoluble fiber helps clean out your colon and can help facilitate regular bowel movements. Both types of fiber make you feel full, which can assist with weight loss.

  • are fairly low in calories and carbs. The average-size apple has 15 grams of carbohydrate and about 4 grams of fiber.

  • contain quercetin, catechin and chlorogenic acid. These three plant-based compounds help our bodies in various ways.

  • come in all sorts of varieties and flavors, from tart to sweet.

  • are versatile. You can eat them raw, chopped in a salad or baked in a pie or tart.

One fun and easy way to prepare apples is to make applesauce from them. I didn’t make applesauce very often until my dear friend told me that it can be made in the microwave! Here is a fun microwave recipe I found online for kids and families; it is easy and yummy. I explain how to make this recipe in the video above. I like to use 2 varieties of apples; it gives it a sweet and sour flavor in combination. You can use any type of apple for this; it is up to you! This recipe is great for eating fresh, but it also freezes well, which makes it a hit for kids and the cook on a busy week night. : )

  • 4 golden delicious apples

  • 4 granny smith apples

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

  • *1 pinch nutmeg

  • 3-6 tablespoons sugar Adjust to your desire for sweetness

Peel, core and slice the apples.

Place the apples in a large microwave safe bowl.

Cover with microwave safe plastic wrap (leave a vented place for steam to escape).

Microwave on high for 10 minutes.

Remove the bowl and stir the apples. Then return the apples to the microwave oven and cook for 5-6 minutes longer.

Using a large fork or potato masher coarsely mash the apples to the desired texture. I do not mash the apples, we like it chunky at our home.

Add in the sugar while the apples are hot and mix well to combine.

Cool to room temperature and then refrigerate. Also you can freeze it in plastic freezer containers or eat for the next snack or meal since it smells so yummy.

This recipe was taken from the link above, *except that I added nutmeg.

Ciao, I hope you enjoy it!
